|
| The Out of School Suspension Program is a structured day program that provides students who have been suspended from school with an opportunity to stay afloat academically and support in successfully re-entering the classroom environment.
Schools, ages, and grades served:
- Funding is currently provided by the Laconia and Belmont School Systems who refer students in grades 5 through 9.
- Referrals for 10th grade students are considered on a case by case basis.
- Other area schools may access the Program on a per diem basis by making arrangements with the Program Case Manager or the agency Director

| Truancy Component |
| When a student is known or suspected to be truant from school, the Laconia and Belmont School Systems can contact the Youth Services Bureau office for assistance in trying to locate the student and getting him/her to school. Youth Services Bureau staff look to inform/remind students and parents of RSA 193:1 which outlines the duty of parents to ensure that their children attend school and the expectation of students that they will be in regular attendance at school. Staff also look to make referrals to programs/agencies that can provide additional support when necessary/appropriate. |

| Community Service Locations |
| The Program Coordinator aims to find community service opportunities for the students that are meaningful. Community service is not used as a punitive measure, but as a tool for making students aware of the needs in their community and helping them to make a contribution while holding them accountable for the negative behavior choice which caused them to be suspended. Community service projects where the students are able to realize the need and gain a sense of how what they are doing makes a difference are ideal. Service work is done for the benefit of local non-profit agencies.
Past Projects
- Salvation Army
Students have helped to serve lunch at the soup kitchen. This has entailed interaction with other Salvation Army volunteers, serving and interacting with individuals there to eat lunch, and assisting with clean-up.
- Sanbornton Historical Document Foundation
Students have helped out by assisting with a mailing which was sent to the residents of Sanbornton to raise funds for the Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is to gather and digitize the historical and contemporaneous documents of the Sanbornton, New Hampshire community.
- Laconia Area Community Land Trust
In the fall of 2004, students in the program helped to clean-up leaves at several of the Land Trust’s properties. The Land Trust aims to meet the housing needs of low- and moderate-income families in Laconia.
