The Take Control Program is an emotional and social skills training program for middle school age youth who have experienced difficulty in controlling their emotions. The goals are:
- To teach youth how to behave assertively rather than aggressively.
- To teach youth how to communicate and problem-solve effectively.
- To teach youth how to recognize the thoughts and feelings of others and to respond in a considerate manner.
Youth who learn and apply the skills presented in this program are more likely to handle difficult social situations better. This program is divided up into three 4-week phases:
- Pro-social Skill Building, exploration and practice of social skills to reduce and prevent conflicts, such as “making a complaint,” “dealing with difficult conversations,” “problem-solving,” and “coping with peer pressure.”
- Emotional Management, guides youth to identify triggers and social cues leading to difficult social situations. Helps youth develop coping strategies through self-evaluation and the application of new skills.
- Empathy Training, helps youth to recognize and to identify with the thoughts and feelings of others before acting.
